Крупнейший природный катаклизм нового года произошел в ночь со вторника на среду в Карибском море на острове Гаити, который делят между собой два государство – одноимённое Гаити и Доминиканская республика. Недалеко от западного берега со стороны государства Гаити с небольшим интервалом произошли два сильных землетрясения магнитудой 7.0 и 5.9 баллов по шкале Рихтера. При этом сейсмологи не исключают повторения толчков. Тем не менее, курорты Доминиканы не пострадали (расстояние между эпицентром землетрясения и Пунто-Каной по прямой составляет около 400 км).

Согласно сообщениям международных информагентств, после первого сильного подземного толчка, зафиксированного на глубине 10 километров в 15 километрах от Порт-о-Пренс (столица государства Гаити), произошли повторные толчки, сила которых доходила до 6-ти баллов. По сообщениям очевидцев, в результате землетрясения была парализована телефонная связь с столице Гаити, прекратилась подача электроэнергии, разрушены многие здания. В Порт-о-Пренсе разрушены здания президентского дворца, парламента, а также почти полностью разрушено здание штаб-квартиры миротворческой миссии ООН. В результате, по некоторым данным на вечер среды, количество погибших может составить более 100 тысяч человек, в основном погребённых под завалами жилых домов.

По сообщению РИА «Новости», Тихоокеанский центр предупреждения об угрозе цунами в среду отменил предупреждение о возможном возникновении цунами у берегов Гаити, Кубы, Багамских островов и Доминиканской республики в результате этого землетрясения. Вследствие подземных толчков в Карибском море образовались лишь слабые приливные волны, высота которых не превышает, по данным центра, 12 сантиметров

Около 200 человек, в том числе туристов, считаются пропавшими без вести в результате мощного землетрясения на Гаити, превратившего в руины популярный среди туристов отель в столице страны.

Повсюду в гаитянской столице с числом жителей в два миллиона человек видны разрушительные последствия землетрясения, разразившегося в стране. Разрушены больницы, школы и гостиницы. В груды обломков превратилось любимое место пребывания туристов - отель «Монтана» (Hotel Montana). В момент, когда стихия обрушилась на Гаити, в гостинице находилось 300 человек, из которых выбраться удалось только сотне человек.

Комментируя ситуацию вокруг отеля «Монтана», в котором проживали туристы и работали граждане Франции, государственный секретарь по вопроса сотрудничества этой страны Алэн Жуайанде (Alain Joyandet), отметил: «На момент обрушения здания в нем, по нашим сведениям, находилось 300 человек. У нас вызывает серьезное беспокойство тот факт, что из них только около 100 человек смогли выбраться наружу.»

Идеальный, с точки зрения своего расположения (отель находился вдали от эпицентра землетрясения в гаитянской столице), отель «Монтана» считался одним из лучших гостиничных объектов на Гаити.

Уже поступили официальные комментарии о ситуации в республике, в том числе и от г-на Доминго Антонио Нана Кабрера, временного поверенного в делах Доминиканской Республики в Российской Федерации. В частности, в заявлении говориться: «Доминиканская Республика не пострадала от землетрясения, которое было зарегистрировано 12 января в столице Гаити городе Порт-о-Пренсе. В столице Доминиканской Республики городе Санто-Доминго толчки были в пределах 2.7 балов по шкале Рихтера, в районе Пунта-Канна толчки практически не ощущались. Все предупреждения о «большой волне» и цунами были сняты Управлением по чрезвычайным ситуациям сегодня в 5:00 утра. Жертв и разрушений нет. Ситуация в стране спокойная. Все государственные службы страны работают в обычном режиме».
