В результате переворота в 1974 году к власти на острове при поддержке правившей тогда в Греции хунты "черных подполковников" пришла группа радикалов, что рассматривалось турецкими властями как подготовка к объединению Кипра и Греции с возможной перспективой новых этнических чисток по отношению к туркам-киприотам, так как переворот сопровождался крупной вспышкой беспорядков на этнической почве.
Турецкая армия высадилась на острове и в ходе боевых действий поставила под свой контроль порядка 35% площади острова. С того времени Кипр остается фактически разделенным на две неравные части, греческую и турецкую.
В 1983 турецкий сектор провозгласил себя Турецкой Республикой Северного Кипра, однако это государство признала только Турция.
Переговоры об объединении острова ведутся давно. Последняя попытка провалилась на референдуме, который прошёл на острове под эгидой ООН 26 апреля 2004. Против объединения проголосовали 75 % греков-киприотов, в отличие от турок-киприотов, 65% из которых поддержали объединение на основе плана, предложенного Генеральным секретарём ООН Кофи Аннаном.
В 2004 Кипр вступил в Европейский союз. Фактически членом ЕС является лишь греческая часть острова. Евросоюз считает, что юрисдикция Республики Кипр должна распространяться и на территорию, контролируемую турками. В рамках переговоров о вступлении в Евросоюз Турции, Еврокомиссия в 2005 году потребовала от Анкары признания суверенитет Республики Кипр и открытия для греков-киприотов морских и воздушных портов.
Надежды на прогресс переговорного процесса между греческой и турецкой общинами острова связывают с избранием в 28 февраля 2008 году президентом Кипра коммуниста Димитриса Христофиса (в 1969-1974 годах учился в Москве).
